Building a Campaign Visual Direction Board That Survives the Crop
When an approved campaign message risks changing meaning as it moves through crops, formats and producers, Care Journey can define a visual direction that survives real production conditions. Designers and producers receive practical visual rules they can test before committing to final assets.
Give every visual rule a reason and a failure test
| Direction Field | Decision to Record | Failure to Test |
|---|---|---|
| Message Role | What the visual helps the audience understand | Aesthetic cue changes or exaggerates the approved message |
| Claim Load | What a reasonable viewer could infer from people, settings, symbols or comparisons | An implied clinical result lacks support or qualification |
| Identity | Which real-world brand and organisational identity must remain clear | Clinic, department or practitioner appears to be a different entity |
| Image Purpose | Whether the image is informative, functional or decorative | Essential information disappears or the alternative-text intent is wrong |
| Composition | Which subject, relationship and safe area must survive | A crop removes context or reverses meaning |
| Typography and Colour | How text remains readable and signals remain redundant | Embedded text cannot adapt or colour is the only cue |
| Derivative Rule | Which meaning and function must persist by destination | One master looks right while common derivatives fail |
The board may use references to demonstrate a rule, but a reference never grants rights, approves a claim or becomes a hidden production specification. The rule should remain understandable when that reference is removed.
Stress-test the direction before the expensive work begins
- Confirm the approved campaign message, audience decision, evidence boundary and real destinations.
- Inventory the meaning carried by subjects, settings, symbols, comparisons, demonstrations and professional cues.
- Define identity, composition, typography, colour, image-purpose and accessibility rules a producer can execute.
- Mark prohibited cues and any implication that copy or fine print cannot honestly repair.
- Apply the direction to representative wide, square, vertical, small-screen and text-heavy derivatives.
- Record failures, revise the rule set and hand the approved direction to a separately scoped production owner.
(W3C's WCAG 2.2 contrast guidance) gives informative thresholds of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text, with stated exceptions. The final implementation must still be tested, but the board can prevent a direction that depends on low contrast or inflexible images of text from becoming the production default.
What This Covers and What Is Separate
- The board records visual meaning, identity cues, evidence limits, accessibility needs, derivative rules and representative tests before asset production begins.
- The board establishes visual direction; finished asset production, rights clearance and channel rollout are separate.
(MOHAP's current health-advertisement service information) spans media and electronic channels, requires supporting material in scope and does not displace other requirements. A direction board may help a team prepare coherent assets, but it is never the applicable authority's approval of those assets.
Questions that expose a board built only for the wall
These questions test whether the visual direction can guide production across meaning, accessibility and derivatives without pretending to be the finished work.
It is a pre-production rule set for visual meaning, identity, image purpose, composition, typography, colour, accessibility, derivatives and prohibited cues. It can contain references, but it is not the produced asset library.
A mood board can communicate aesthetic territory. An operational direction board also explains why a cue is used, what meaning it may carry, what must survive a derivative and what would make the direction fail.
Not automatically. The board guides a separately scoped production team. Photography, video, design files, templates, usage rights and destination builds remain downstream capabilities unless expressly included.
No. It can define upstream accessibility and claim constraints, but the final asset and destination must be tested and the applicable authority must decide the real advertising route.

Give Production Teams a Testable Visual Direction
Show us the approved message, intended destinations and a visual reference that fails outside its ideal frame. Care Journey will assess whether the gap needs visual direction, message clarification or a production brief.
